Atkins Factory, Hinckley

Moorhead Excavations was awarded its largest direct Demolition Contract to date.
The demolition of the former Atkins Hosiery Factory in Hinckley Town Centre for Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council involved the following specialist works:-
• Site Decontamination – including removal of HSE Notifiable Asbestos Containing Materials and Asbestos Cement products; controlled removal of Pigeon Waste; decommissioning and removal of above ground and underground storage tanks containing Hydrocarbons and other Hazardous chemicals.
• Separation of the factory building from an adjoining Grade 2 Listed building on 3 floors using hand tools, mini-excavators and Skid- Steers (hoisted into position).
The remainder of the site was then soft stripped with arisings segregated for recycling. Remote demolition was subsequently undertaken utilising Moorhead Group’s modern fleet of plant including a 14m High Reach Excavator, Demolition Excavators fitted with associated attachments.
10,000 tonnes of rubble was then processed to 6F2 graded Hardcore for re-use on site using a 60t Impact Crusher and Rubber-Tyred Loading Shovel. The site was then graded, fenced and footpaths reinstated ready for development.
